Carved walnut wood Italian Renaissance Revival center table is useful as a console table, entry table, writing desk, and library table.
Table was created or imported by the R.J. Horner Company, New York, during the 19th century when the demand for Renaissance Revival pieces was high due to architectural trends beginning in 1805. The table dates to post November 1, 1886 when R.J. Horner & Company opened in New York.
The table is in the 16th century Classic Roman design style of Hugues Sambin and Jacques Androuet du Cerceau. The French and Italians made versions of these too.
The top is fitted with two draw leaves with small knob pulls and two drawers that blend in with the gadrooned frieze.
The molded top edge is enhanced with carved demi-lunes and arrows.
The trestle is enhanced with a grand balustrade and links the exuberantly carved side supports, which rest upon lion paw feet.
R.J. Horner Co. mark is on the backside of the apron on the left side.
Table will complement interiors featuring elements of Italian Renaissance, Renaissance Revival, Byzantine, French and German Renaissance, and Henry IV.
