Exemplary last quarter 19th century elaborate German Renaissance style carved chestnut mantel. Figural jambs are of high relief carved knights in full armor, wielding shields and standing on substantial plinths with dragon carvings on the front panels. The wide frieze has an ornate rinceau decoration intertwined with a shield, and in the center, the heads of a knight and a beast flanking a crown. The first level of the double-galleried overmantel has turned balusters with scroll ornament and central tablet with two flanking panels all having "Grotesque" style carving with scrolling leaves, urns and mythical creatures. The upper gallery has barley twist supports and four panels with identical scrolling foliate pattern. The surmounting entablature has lion form corbels with floral ornamented spandrels and four repousse copper panels across the curved frieze, repeating a scrolling acanthus motif but each of unique design. The cornice has foliate and egg and dart moldings. The foliate molding is repeated under the mantel shelf and the egg and dart moldings appear again between the galleries.
Shelf is 94” wide x 14” deep. Overmantel cornice width is 83 1/2”. Opening is 53” wide x 43” high. less
