About the Knole Sofa:
It's believed that the Knole was the very first upholstered sofa. And the first convertible sofa. The tale of the Knole Sofa begins in the early 17th century, a time when extravagant upholstery and grandiose design were all the rage. It's said to have been created for Knole House, a stately home in Kent, England. Though its exact origins remain a bit of a mystery, this sofa has certainly lived a life filled with royalty, nobility, and aristocracy. Imagine it as the confidante of kings, queens, and lords, where secrets were whispered in its cozy embrace.
The Knole Sofa truly stands out due to its distinctive design, characterized by its high, straight back, deep seating, and adjustable arms. Its arms, which can be raised or lowered, create an inviting and intimate space. If only furniture could talk, the Knole Sofa could regale us with tales of whispered courtly secrets, passionate love stories, and a place of comfort during turbulent times. When it comes to materials, the Knole Sofa knows how to make a statement. Traditional versions are draped in sumptuous fabrics, ornate fringes, and tasseled ties. Its regal appearance has inspired countless imitations over the years, yet none can quite capture the essence of the original.
It is a captivating and storied piece of furniture that has transcended centuries, styles, and trends. With its rich history and enduring elegance, it's a true gem for collectors and connoisseurs.
Looking at the Knole sofa with a modern eye, it’s like the Meryl Streep of the furniture world, able to adapt to different roles and styles over the centuries. The Knole sofa pairs well with other traditional English pieces – brass lamps, leather accessories, oil paintings and hand-woven wool rugs. If you're lucky enough to own one, you possess a piece of history that brings charm, sophistication, and a touch of whimsy to any space. The Knole Sofa remains an enduring symbol of timeless style and a reminder that, in the world of antique and vintage furniture, there's nothing quite like the classics. less
