This massive, ornately carved, Georgian throne chair came from an estate in the Washington, D.C. area. The chair measures 52 inches high at the crest; it is 29 inches wide by 23 inches deep. The seat is 17 inches high. The neo-classical carving is extensive and quite impressive with shell motifs and foliate designs on the crest, stiles, and apron. Cabriole legs have nicely carved ornamentation on the knees, and the arms are also nicely carved. The beautiful embellishments have been highlighted with a parcel-gilt finish which contrasts nicely against the ebony finish of the frame. The seat and back have been completely rebuilt and upholstered with a period-appropriate and very regal, gold-on-gold striped brocade fabric. The chair appears to date from the early 19th Century, but possibly even the late18th Century. (The finish is not original.)
This ornate masterpiece was barely held together with chewing gum and band-aids when we found it – well, not literally - but, in any event, it required extensive and tedious restoration. The chair had already been repaired and reinforced at several points, and we have added further reinforcements and repairs in order to save and sturdy up this magnificent chair. Consequently, we have noted in the condition report that there are some imperfections. (As you can see from the photographs, the reinforcements are not readily apparent.) Make no mistake: this chair is now in very good restored condition, and wherever you use this chair, it will certainly be a stunning show-stopper!
Styles: Georgian, Chippendale, Rococo, Baroque, Gothic, Hollywod Regency less
