Chiavari chairs are named for the Italian city where they originated. This little town, located between Genoa and the Cinque Terre, is where the Descalzi brothers opened their famous furniture workshop in 1795. They would go on to produce the first of these chairs in 1807 when the president of the Economic Society of Chiavari went to the cabinetmakers for help in updating the institute’s seating. While the first-ever example was crafted out of cherrywood, many mid-century modern iterations were made of brass.
The style in notoriety in 1953 after it was used in Jackie and John F. Kennedy’s wedding, which was attended by more than 1,200 guests. less
