Although often associated with the eucalyptus-scented bungalows hung in the California hills, the Arts and Crafts style actually began on the other sides of the pond. The handcrafted, back-to-basics style originated in England in the 1850s, then slowly made the pilgrimage westward, landing in the U.S. in the early 1900s, where it was succinctly renamed “Craftsman” and merged with the Spanish-American Mission aestheic. The antithesis of ornate Victorian style, Arts and Crafts style aims to bring the outdoors in with simple lines and lots and lots of unadorned wood.
