Kashgar is an Australian business first started by Bernie Heaphy in the 1980's, through his love of exotic travel and his fascination with all things handmade and beautiful.
His daughter Linda and her husband Ian now continue the family tradition of travel and the collection of beautiful, tribally sourced jewellery, textiles and artefacts. Our mission, as always, is to support, honour and maintain age-old traditions as well as ethical and sustainable methods of production.
We hand pick only that which is handmade, unusual and beautiful. Raising awareness of these items has the beneficial effect of increasing demand and value, as time-honoured means of craftsmanship passed from generation to generation disappear in favour of mass produced goods.
Kashgar means more than just an appreciation of handcrafted items. By supporting traditional methods of production we encourage cottage industries to thrive and help ethnic minorities maintain self-sufficiency, while reducing impact on the environment. It's about preserving traditions that, if lost now, will be lost forever.
