This is a framed etching by American painter and etcher J. S. King (1852-1925), titled the Courtship of Miles Standish, with a a copyright date of 1886 and published by Fishel Adler & Schwartz. The original painting was by the artist Charles Yardley Turner (1850-1919) of Marlyland and New York.
This is imagery from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem "The Courtship of Miles Standish" from the mid 1850's and refers to the courtship of Priscilla Mullens and John Alden. The spinning wheel was symbolic of motherhood and diligence in Pilgrim era America.
The etching is set behind glass in the original carved wood frame that measures 26” x 36” x 1.75”. The artwork itself measures 22.25” x 32”.
