This table is absolutely stunning. A vintage iron Louis Vuitton dining or display table with a custom marble top. We acquired this table with a bit of lore to be had-- when we purchased it, we found it at an antique fair from a dealer who had purchased it from another dealer who found it in France. Upon acquiring it, we were told this was a piece from the 1930's and it was a piece that Louis Vuitton produced for the restaurant car on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express as a collaboration.
While it's widely known that Louis Vuitton designed trunks specifically for the Orient Express, but finding information on furniture collaboration has been difficult. Thus said, this table may or may not have come from the Orient Express. This table perhaps could have been a retail display table, or perhaps a bistro table for a retail store somewhere in France. All we know for sure, is that it is absolutely gorgeous and 100% authentic, and still bears the original LV medallion.
With wear and patina consistent with age and use, this table has more style and history than most of the pieces we've ever come across. This table would look excellent in any mid century modern, art deco, or contemporary environment. A wonderful piece of history that is a collector's heirloom piece. We currently have this table in our gallery alongside a Vladimir Kagan sofa, a Paul Evans coffee table and a Fendi credenza and not only does it hold its own, it steals the show!
Louis Vuitton was a French fashion designer and businessman who founded the Louis Vuitton brand in 1854. He was born on August 4, 1821, in Anchay, a small village in the Jura region of eastern France. Vuitton's father was a farmer, and he was the fourth child in a family of six children.
In 1835, at the age of 14, Vuitton left home and traveled to Paris to find work. He became an apprentice to a box-maker and packer, where he learned the skills that would later help him design and manufacture his own luggage. In 1854, Vuitton opened his own workshop in Paris, where he designed and produced his own line of trunks and luggage.
Vuitton's luggage was unique in that it was lightweight, airtight, and durable, which made it popular among the traveling elite. His designs featured a beige canvas with the now-famous LV monogram, which he created to prevent counterfeiting. He also introduced a new locking system that made his luggage more secure and tamper-proof.
In the late 19th century, the Louis Vuitton brand became known worldwide, with stores opening in London, New York, and other major cities. After Vuitton's death in 1892, his son Georges Vuitton took over the business and continued to expand the brand's offerings. Louis Vuitton's grandson, Gaston-Louis Vuitton, later introduced the company's first line of handbags in 1930.
