The Japanese term for everyday tea drinking tea cups is yunomi which means "a utensil for drinking hot water". Hasami ware (called Hasami yaki in Japanese) is a form of porcelain produced in Hasami in Nagasaki prefecture. It is a traditional handicraft that was first produced in the latter part of the Sengoku period (1467-1603) and remains popular today as tableware for daily use. While traditionally used as tea cups, these gilded filagree rimmed beauties have been used, in our home, as relish and or sauce bowls when entertaining. Handcrafted from fine translucent milky white porcelain with a beautiful underglaze floating leaf motif on the exterior and on the upper rims of the cups’ interiors, colors are pale peach, blush, dove grey and white on a milky white background. Each measures 3¼” x 2¼” D/H; capacity, to the rim, 6 oz. apiece; together the set weighs 15 oz. There is an underglaze red seal and gold gilt mark on the bottom of each cup which belongs to the maker but since I do not read Japanese, maker is unknown to me. In excellent, pristine condition with little, if any wear. Gorgeous to look at and whether you use them for tea or entertaining, these beauties are definite head turners!
