There is something to be said about Japanese craftsmanship - it strives for perfection. It has been my observation, but I really see it in reality during my recent visit to Kyoto. Everything is e presented to be at its best, from the way vegetables are bundled in the Supermarket to the traditional Kaiseki dinner where methods of cooking - raw and cooked are offered to guests on beautiful dinnerware.
This simple square piece of small furniture is a hibachi. It is made well for the purpose of boiling water for tea. The wood is a tight grain , finished on four sides with two recessed handles for easy handling. Japanese cabinetry is admired for its precision, its joinery and everything fits. The original intent for this piece of furniture is for heating water for tea. Charcoal would be placed in the copper liner for heating water for tea. The copper liner shows wear.
Today the hibachi can function as a small table, it has a glass top with four strips of wood to give it a good looking finish. People have filled the copper liner with white sand and make a vignette of sea shells and coral. It can be used as a coffee table, an occasional table in any room and it fits in almost any decor. A stand is custom made to raise the Hibachi off the floor and perhaps to give it a more finished presentation.
Please note the height is including the wood stand. less
