Mid-century Flygsfors sommerso vase is a stunning example of Swedish glass design from the 1960s. Made in 1963, this beautiful aubergine-colored vase stands 9 inches tall and features two dimples on the rim. Sommerso is a technique of layering different colors of glass to create a striking visual effect, and this vase is a great example of how this technique can be used to create depth and richness of color.
Flygsfors was a glassworks founded in Sweden in 1888, and although it initially produced window glass, it shifted to cut glass tableware in the early twentieth century. During the 1940s and 50s, Swedish glassworks like Flygsfors led the world in innovative design, benefiting from their country's neutrality during World War II.
Paul Kedelv was a designer for Flygsfors in the 1950s and produced many sculptured vessels, including the Coquille series, which features organic forms that resemble shells. His designs continued to be produced by Flygsfors even after he left the company. Other well-known designers for Flygsfors include Viktor Berndt, who designed glass from 1955 to 1974, and his tribal mask vases are highly sought-after by collectors.
Flygsfors was taken over by Orrefors in 1974 but closed five years later. The glassworks operated as a studio in the 1990s but ultimately closed in 2001. Today, Flygsfors designs, particularly those by Paul Kedelv, are highly prized by collectors for their innovation and beauty. less
