Comprised of three pieces of hand-carved Italian marble, this wall fountain features a Neoclassical depiction of the Roman god Bacchus … more Comprised of three pieces of hand-carved Italian marble, this wall fountain features a Neoclassical depiction of the Roman god Bacchus (his Greek name was Dionysus). As Bacchus was the god of winemaking, he is often depicted in art with symbolic grapevines, as seen by the cluster of grapes on the front of the basin, just beneath the undulating and rolled rim. Above the basin is a shaped wall (carved from a separate piece of marble) with thick molding and two C-scrolls flanking the low relief carving of Bacchus. A grapevine encircles Bacchus’ head, whose mouth has been carved agape, allowing for a waterspout to be inserted.

The shapely basin sits on top of a concave column (the third carved piece) adorned with a subtle recession on the front. There is a rectangular plinth beneath, embellished with three flutings on the sides and a parted leaf on the front in between two C-scrolls. A thick rectangular base gives added support to the beautifully carved marble.
