This beauty was handwoven in one of the villages outside the Municipality of Bangued, capital of the province of Abra in the Philippines. The basket’s Japanese-influenced design and motif has to do with Japanese basket weaving volunteers coming to the region in the 1970s. Over a 15-year period, local traditional art form was transformed through the Japanese volunteers sharing their weaving techniques in this cross-cultural exchange. Handcrafted from rattan and nito vine wefts, using an over and under weave over rattan warps, it’s visually striking with great textural interest. It measures 10½” high including handles; without handles 8”; 12¾” x 12” W/D; interior 8” x 12” x 11” H/W/D; weight 7 oz. In excellent condition with negligible wear. Whimsically charming yet utilitarian, it’s a great catchall basket, décor accent or fabulous plant basket (liner not included) that will complement any style.
