Most likely Chester County or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Circa 1770's
A stately piece of furniture. A flat top Pennsylvania highboy. Unusual form, and great size.
In 2 parts. The uppercase with a cove moulded top cornice, and a 2 over 4 lip moulded drawer arrangement, and Fluted quarter columns. The lower case have ing a architectural mid moulding, one long drawer over 3 drawers, fluted quarter columns, and shell carved knees on the cabriole legs with ball and claw feet. A reverse tombstone cut skirt, and nice curved cut apron the sides.
Walnut with poplar secondary woods, and original early nails. Original Brasses.
The squatty ball and claw feet remind me of pieces from the Philadelphia area. The carved shells on the knees are particularly nice. However, the cabinet work/construction suggests Chester or Lancaster County. The drawer linings are poplar, with the drawer bottoms nailed directly to the bottom of the drawers, instead of being chamfered and slid into a grove on the drawer sides. All of the dovetails are "wedged" which was done in primary southern-southeastern, PA.
This piece is a large and imposing stately piece of furniture, and will most certainly be a topic of conversation in any room. In the 18th century, pieces such as these were often placed in a common room of sorts where they would be noticed and talked about by guests in their houses.
Size: 78” tall, 45” wide, 24” deep overall.
Provenance: This piece was sold by Gilliland’s Period Furniture and Fine Art of Ligoner, PA in 1994
A copy of the supporting bill of sale will be provided.
