Incredible 1980s abstract original cast paper painting by Marilyn Markowitz (1925-2007), acquired from her Colorado estate in 2022. Soft tones of blue color.
Marilyn Markowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York. She and her husband, an officer in the US Air Force, moved to Colorado in the 1960s. It was in the American southwest that she found her artistic inspiration. She earned her BA from Colorado College and her MFA from the University of Colorado. Markowitz considered her work to be "western contemporary" and worked in a wide variety of mediums.
Marilyn was born to Sylvia and Arthur Goldberg in Brooklyn, New York on May 25, 1925; she married Ike Markowitz on July 5, 1944 in Topeka, Kansas. A long time Colorado resident, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College in Colorado Springs and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She taught art at Harrison Junior High School in Colorado Springs until turning her full-time efforts to a professional art career.
Her work has been broadly exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and has been acquired by a broad spectrum of major corporations such as IBM, Scripps Howard, Suburu, Storage Tech, Exxon, Westin Hotels, as well as individual collectors worldwide. Her work has been highlighted in American Artist Magazine, Denver Magazine, Empire Magazine, LA Revue Moderne Magazine, Paris, Instructor Magazine, and others. In 1981 she received the Art in Public Places Award from the State of Colorado for a painting placed in the School of Business of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.
Marilyn, along with her daughter Amy and her daughter-in-law Joan Markowitz, founded the Albatross Fine Arts Gallery in Boulder, which later, under the guidance of Joan Markowitz, evolved into the MacLaren-Markowitz Gallery. less
