1930s Prickly Pear Sonoran Desert, Pastel on Canvas, Raymond Nott (American, 1888-1948), Original pastel signed by artist, double matted and newly framed in simple black wood behind UV protected glass.
Artist Raymond Nott created many beautiful paintings and pastels of the American West during the early part of the twentieth century, between the first and second world wars. Records at auction houses range in price, but some of his more exceptional pieces have gaveled over $50,000. This is one of those exceptional works in both bucolic realism, composition, complex tonal coloration and mastery. It reflects a magnificent view of Southwestern Arizona through a blooming prickly pear cacti glowing in vibrant color .

About Artist:
Nott was born in Missouri and grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and was for a time associated with Roycroft in New York. He remained in San Diego after serving in the navy in the first world war around 1918. Thereafter he was devoting most of his time to his art, before moving finally to Los Angeles where he passed away in 1948. Nott is very well known for the quality of his almost velvety surface pastels particularly, though he did also work in oil. less
