This exquisite still life with its blue-yellow color harmonies is an outstanding example from Stockholm-born artist-designer, Olle Hjortzberg. Initially trained by his father, a skilled watercolorist, Hjortzberg studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. Following his marriage, he traveled extensively with his wife-first to Paris and Italy, then to Syria and Palestine where the vibrant environment of design and pattern had a profound influence on his own art. In addition to his work as an easel painter, Hjortzberg was a gifted muralist and designer of stained-glass windows, book bindings, posters, playing cards, commemorative stamps, and book illustrations. Notably, he Illustrated King Gustav V's Bible (1910-17) and the Swedish hymnal (1912); produced artwork for the Nobel Prize for Literature (1912, 1912, 1928-30); and designed the poster for the Stockholm Olympic Games (1912). He served as Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy of Stockholm from 1911-37. In 1945, Hjortzberg was awarded the Prins Eugen Medal for his artistic achievements.
