This pair of primates casually snacking captured my admiration a long time ago in a favorite antique shop. With their delicate features and Jungle Book quality, I imagine the artist had a story in mind when bringing this monkey and orangutan to life; It is not a typical subject for tiles of the region and period.
Maybe the gorgeous Italian frescos in The White Lotus finally broke me after initially passing these tiles up more than once. The next time I spotted them, that weird and wonderful theme song rang in my ears, and I caved to this delightful duo, now awaiting a forever home. less
