Though cabbage and lettuce ware has graced Southern tables for decades in the United States, cabbage ware … more Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
Though cabbage and lettuce ware has graced Southern tables for decades in the United States, cabbage ware has a fascinating history that goes back farther than one might think! A Southern Living article from 2021 states that, “The origins of the veggie-inspired dishes actually reach across the pond (and much farther back in history). Sotheby’s porcelain and ceramics specialist Suzanne Harrison states, in a 2013 article from the Wall Street Journal, “Pottery and porcelain table wares in naturalistic forms such as fruits and vegetables were widely produced in England and Europe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.” But it was a ceramicist decidedly closer to home, Dodie Thayer, that sent the leafy pottery's popularity skyrocketing in the United States in the 1960s. Lettuce and cabbage ware mixes surprisingly well with other dinner and serveware, no matter the shape or color. This whimsical, fun-to-look-at lively lemon crudité platter with attached bowl is textured with white ribs to heighten its sense of realism; attributed to Secla Pottery of Portugal. Crudité is pronounced like “Crew-Dee-Tay” and is much easier to eat than say or spell. The word crudité is French, so if you want, you can just call them raw veggies :-) Whatever the reason or season, this beauty will add color, charm and texture to any tablescape. It measures 12¾” x 11½” x 3” W/D/H (height taken from stem of attached bowl); attached bowl 7” x 5” x 2” D/W/H; weight 2 lbs. 9 oz.; handcrafted from highly glazed earthenware in a sunny lemon color with raised white ribs; makers # underneath – attributed to Secla Pottery of Portugal. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. One indiscernible chip underneath the bowl’s rim to the back on the left side, which is not noticeable unless you turn the platter upside down. (see photo 8). For a lettuce or cabbage ware collector, this beauty will be a fabulous add to that collection or the perfect gift for someone who is.
