The work is an exciting mix of intensely colorful, abstract, pop and graphic art imagery.
Jasper John's works incorporated abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and pop art. When he montaged these styles together, his work has often been compared to that of 20th Century iconic artist, Robert Rauschenberg.
The influence is not surprising, as the two were lovers.
The size and dynamic montaged mix of color and imagery, make the piece a focal, dramatic display that would complement a myriad interior design decors.
It has the look of artwork you would find in a SoHo loft in NYC.
The piece was framed in Italy and brought to the United States by an art collector, along with other fabulous Postmodern furniture and mirrors, many of which we have listed on Chairish.
Using a very unique, modernist framing technique, l have not seen in the United States, the artwork is affixed, (to image) onto an almost 3" thick, boxed white framed, wooden board. The 3" wide white sides have a matte finish, and feel like laminate.
The image was then coated with 4 layers of professional photo lacquer that contains a UV protective agent.
The lacquer coating is invisible and adds no sheen to the image, however, it enables you to wipe the image (and sides) with a damp cloth or mild detergent. (See image of label affixed to the back of frame).
The result is a fantastic, streamline, frameless boxed frame with no reflective overlay on the image.
I was told the process is very expensive.
The art collector, who brought this from Italy, wanted no glass or reflective covering on the image, yet insure the image would not fade by direct sunlight.
There is a small white 1" or so curvature on the image. I have magnified it. It's not a tear. I'm not sure what it is, but it gets lost on the enormous work. I mention it for accuracy.
The piece is in very nice vintage condition. There may be some minute wear, nothing detracting.
Measurements
55.5" W x 33" H x 3" Deep
The image and extraordinary Italian framing make this an exceptional mid century or postmodern graphic pop art work. less
