Superb example of Chwast's graphic art style
A ballpoint pen is transformed into an ornate NYC skyscraper. The base of the building is surrounded by a flurry of New Yorkers and cars heading chaotically in every direction.
Chwast's signature peeks through this frantic circus of activity, in the lower left corner.
This is the original, full-sized, out of print Writers Poster of 1985, during the Mayor Koch administration. (There are smaller reproductions on the market)
Measurements
29.5" W x 39" H
In the upper right hand corner is printed:
Edward I. Koch Mayor, Department of Cultural Affairs Henry Geldzahler Commissioner Arts Apprenticeship Program .
Seymour Chwast, a design legend and co-founder of Push Pin Studios, led a revolution in graphic design movement in the 60’s and 70’s, producing bold, vibrant works that pushed the limits of the visual medium.
In 1987, he partnered with Mohawk Paper Mills, to create a campaign introducing Mohawk’s new paper lines, by reprinting 15 posters that Chwast had previously designed.
Wonderful, whimsical, piece of NYC graphic art history. less
