Victorian Footman, Ca. 1890, in all original condition, used to warm plates and or food in front of the fire,
The footman is a British term for a metal stand, usually of polished steel or brass, and either oblong or oval in shape, for keeping plates and dishes hot before a dining room fire. A footman was useful prior to the early 20th century, before hot water was easily obtained, and when open fires were common.
Brass Footmans were used by the Georgians and Victorians through the 19th Century as Fireside Plate Warmers where before a meal a 'Footman' (House Servant, hense the name) would place the Brass Footman beside the Dining Room Fire to warm the family and dinner guests plates.
I have not polished this! This will shine like new if you do,
