I purchased this breathtaking Kantha coverlet with the intention of having it placed on a canvas board for use as wall décor in our former home but never got around to getting it done. Kantha is one of the oldest forms of embroidery from India’s Bengali region of the sub-continent - today the eastern Indian states of West Bengal and Orissa and Bangladesh. Kantha refers to both the style of running stitch, as well as the finished cloth. It was a craft that was practiced by women of all rural classes from the rich landlord’s wife making her own elaborate embroidered quilt in her leisure time to the tenant farmer’s wife making her own thrifty coverlet, equal in beauty and skill. It was never commissioned by kings, nor ordered by landed gentry, but passed down in learning and dowry from mother to daughter. This gorgeous coverlet’s top layer is beautifully and meticulously handcrafted from recycled beaded saris in a one-of-a-kind patchwork pattern. The back of the coverlet is solid with no embellishment. It measures 57” x 72” W/L; weight 3 lbs. 2 oz. It has never been used but as with all things crafted by hand, it is imperfectly perfect, and therein lies its charm. Colors are magnificently vibrant with every hue under the rainbow represented, so will complement most any decorscape you have in your home. Crafted from cotton textile fabric; hems are nicely finished. Purchased from a design store in Kansas City that is no longer. A fabulous find whether it is used as a coverlet or artwork, its sustainable pedigree, intricacy and wow factor will add textural interest and vibrant color in any space in your home!
