This pair of early 19th century Grand Tour Period bronze gilt volute krater urns on stone bases are absolutely breathtaking. The base is a heavy black slate with etched Neo-classic floral motifs on the front of each base. The metal is stunning with a small amount of patina in areas. These pieces are very heavy and amazingly constructed and formed. The figures on the urn are Roman.
In the 18th century the Grand Tour became a rite of passage for aristocratic young men. The journey typically involved three or four years of travel around Europe and included an extensive sojourn in Italy, as Rome was considered the ultimate destination for what might now be characterized as cultural tourism.
