"Billie, 11 mo." on verso. Son of an American poet. Unframed. Image size, 8.5"H x 6.5"W. Born in Berlin Germany in 1869. After graduating from the University of Berlin, Genthe moved to San Francisco in 1895. There he established himself as a portrait photographer of celebrities. He also did a series of Chinatown genre, which was published as Old Chinatown, and scenes of the destruction caused by the 1906 earthquake. In 1911 he moved to NYC where he pioneered in dance photography, producing Book of the Dance (1916) and Isadora Duncan (1929). He penned his memoir called As I Remember before his death in New Milford, CT on Aug. 10, 1942. Arnold exhibited at Calif. Camera Club, 1899, 1901 (gold medal); Society of Independent Artists, 1917; Paris, 1928 (gold medal); Staten Island Museum, 1975. In: NY Historical Society and the Oakland Museum. See less
