Nearly 200-year's old, this antique book published in 1827 by Carey, Lea & Carey for the upcoming year, was meant to be given as a Christmas and New Years gift. The small antique book has a quarter leather binding, hand-marbled endpapers, a frontispiece illustration, as well as other engraved illustrations throughout the book.
Enjoyed by its previous owners, the vintage early 19th century book shows wear including foxing and spotting on many pages. The "Remember Me" dedication page, frontispiece engraving with is tissue paper cover, and title page have separated from the book. There is a split along the spine on the front cover and the front hinge is loosening. A previous owner neatly wrote her name "Lucia Holliday Sickels" at the front of the book as well as pasted label with her name at the back of the book.
The engravings include a beautiful picture of the Catskill Falls in New York State.
"The Atlantic Souvenir; A Christmas and New Year's Offering was a 19th-century illustrated gift book published annually by Carey, Lea & Carey. Launched in 1826, it was the first American gift book or literary annual, before ceasing publication in 1832 and merged with The Token to form The Token and Atlantic Souvenir.
Each lavishly bound and highly illustrated edition contained poetry, short stories and other pieces of writing by popular writers of the day. Primarily published in the autumn, gift books were intended to be given away as presents during the holiday season rather than read by the purchaser."
