David Hockney ( B. 1937 ) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. He is an important contributor to The Pop Art Movement of the 1960's. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of The 20th Century. His artworks have commanded greater popular acclaim than any other Contemporary British artist. The Pop Art Expressionist style artworks have been the subject of more than 400 solo exhibitions. Art works by Hockney are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
" Mr and Mrs Clark Percy " was painted between 1970 and 1971. It depicts the fashion designer Ossie Clark and the textile designer Celia Birtwell in their flat in Notting Hill Gate shortly after their wedding, with one of the couple's cats on Clark's Knee. The white cat depicted in the painting was Blanche; Percy was another of their cats, but Hockney thought " Percy " made a better title.
The work is part of a series of double portraits made by Hockney beginning in 1968, often portraying his friends. Hockney and Clark had been friends since 1961, and Hockney was Clark's best man at his wedding to Birtwell in 1969. Celia became one of his most important muses and central figures in Hockney's portrait work throughout his career.
The painting was presented to The Tate Gallery by friends of the gallery in 1971, and remains in The Tate collection. It is features in The Ten of The Greatest Paintings in Britain vote, the only work by a living artist. Mr and Mrs Clark Percy is widely considered one of Hockney's most important masterpiece works.
