77267 Antique Chinese Peking Wedding Rug, 11'01 x 15'05.
This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug features a rounded open center medallion floating in the center of a golden yellow field. The medallion is comprised of four Chinese characters arranged in a circle with a swirl of blooming peonies. The characters read 'Bai Tou Dao Lao', a phrase that translates to 'white heads grow old together'. This phrase is often used to congratulate a newly married couple, and this antique Chinese rug was likely meant as a wedding gift. The corner spandrels feature lotuses, peonies, plum blossoms, and chrysanthemums blooming from the same branches; these four flowers when appearing together represent the four seasons. The wide main border is adorned with additional branches of the four flowers overlaid upon a fret and meander motif. The winding border pattern is seen to represent long life and never ending joy. Additional plum blossoms, which represent fortitude and resilience, gracefully decorate the ink blue secondary border. The various symbols used throughout the piece all come together to create a depth of meaning befitting of a lavish gift to bestow upon a newly married couple.
