Very unusual and stately lamp featuring four classical Greek or Roman figures of different sizes. The figures are highly detailed when viewed closely, and appear to be paper engravings which have been decoupaged to the INSIDE of the glass before the rosy pink paint was applied using the reverse painting technique within a hurricane glass globe. Design is accented with a rope motif border and gold leaf bands at top and bottom. Lamp sits on a hefty wooden base and is finished with a top vase cap that appears to be either rosewood or mahogany.
Decoupage and decalomania lamps were very popular at the turn of the 20th C. A rare, elegant, and one of a kind find that would compliment an array of interiors! This piece most likely dates to the turn of the century. Unmarked.
Lamp stands approx. 22" from the base to the top of the socket with a 6" diameter at the widest point.
As would be expected with an older handcrafted item, there is minor oxidation where the paper figures have become slightly detached from the glass interior, which you can see in the photos as a shift in color tone. Not detracting to the antique quality of this piece in my eye, but mentioned so you can make an informed personal decision about the character of this piece. Wiring was been tested, but as with all vintage lighting, it is advisable to have a professional inspect prior to use/installation. less
