The top lifts up and to give you an easy was to place and remove your ashes from inside. The scuttle has some chipping which gives it a great patina. There is some rusting inside the ash area but the rusting is not deep. Please see all the photos for details. It at one time has a shovel but it is no longer available. This fireplace accessory is very stable and would look great on your hearth. It is approximately 20" x 16" and stands about 13" tall. less
