Tonalá is a city and municipality within the Guadalajara metropolitan area in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. Tonalá has a rich 3,000 year long history of being one of Mexico’s prolific producers of pottery due to the type of clay/soil found in the region. While eleven different types of pottery styles are practiced in Tonalá, the most well-known and popular is known as bruñido, meaning burnished, referring to the color of the clay. This lovely petite heart-shaped trinket box was handcrafted from bruñido clay, hand painted with rich complementary hues of grey, charcoal, black and rust with a calla lily and leaf motif on the lid and half circles on the lower portion. I used to collect heart shaped pottery boxes and acquired this cutie many years ago while traveling and vacationing in Guadalajara. It measures 1¼” x 2” x 2¾” H/D/W (height is with the lid on); weight 4 oz. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. For a collector of heart-shaped earthenware trinket boxes, this petite cutie will be a great add to that collection of the perfect gift for someone who is.
