About The Poster: Lefèvre-Utile was founded in Nantes, France, in 1846 by Jean-Romain Lefèvre and his business partner and wife, Pauline-Isabelle Utile. Their initials (LU) were first used by Alfons Mucha for an 1897 calendar ad for the Lefèvre-Utile Biscuit Co.
About the Artist: Delphin Enjolras (1857 Coucouron –1945 Toulouse) was a French academic painter. Enjolras painted portraits, nudes, interiors, but is best known for his intimate portraits of young women. Lefèvre-Utile commissioned Enjolras for numerous advertising projects, both for their trade card series as well as for larger advertisements, like this one.
This carton was brought into the gallery by the great-great-grandson of the original Lefevre-Utile family, so the provenance of the piece could not be better. Rare and collectable.
