This Mark Rothko rare vintage iconic Abstract Expressionist softcover landmark volume offset lithograph print exhibition art book is a very special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The Modern Art retrospective exhibition book is published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang New York and Tate Gallery Publishing Limited, Millbank London, printed in Great Britain in 1996 by Balding + Mansell, Northamptonshire.
Mark Rothko ( 1903 - 1970 ) is an American Modernist painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally defined as an Abstract Expressionist. His bold use of color fields make the artworks impressively iconic and highly individual. Rothko is considered to be one of the most important and influential American painters of The Twentieth Century. Art works by Rothko are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This definitive volume, first published to coincide with a major exhibition of Rothko's work in 1987, has been updated and reissued here by The Gallery of London. Spanning nearly 40 years of Rothko's artistic life, it contains a chronologically arranged collection of 94 full-color plates and 17 black & white illustrations that examine his development from early figurative works to masterpieces created near the end of his life.
Included in the book are fascinating essays by two major scholars Irving Sandler and Robert Rosenblum, along with contributions by Rothko Foundation members, Bonnie Clearwater and Dana Cramer, and leading critics Robert Goldwater and David Sylvester, all providing insight into the extraordinary dramatic conflict Rothko achieved in his work. Also included are writings and comments by Rothko himself describing his technique, providing greater understanding behind the genius of one of the most influential artists of The Twentieth Century.
The rare out of print Abstract Expressionist landmark volume softcover art book measures 9" W X 10 5/8" H X 3/4" D, with 206 pages, featuring 111 offset lithograph print illustrations.
It is in excellent vintage condition consistent with age, light signs of handling, and light to moderate wear. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
