This Henri Matisse " Jazz " very rare vintage 1960 lithograph print Museum of Modern Art collector's hardcover art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection. Published by R. Piper Bucherei & Co. Verlag Munich exclusively for the members of The Museum of Modern Art New York, printed in Germany in 1960 in an unnumbered limited edition by Thormann & Goetsch, Berlin.
This is a rare opportunity for true Matisse fans and collectors as this exquisite small scale, coveted lithograph print high quality fine art book is long out of print and very scarce to find.
The Museum of Modern Art was honored in 1948 receiving, as a gift of the artist, one of the 100 copies without text of Matisse's portfolio " Jazz ". The complete set of plates had been twice exhibited at the museum in 1948 and again in 1960.
With the gracious permission of E. Teriade the plates in this volume have been reproduced from the 1947 Paris publication of Editions verve. Of the twenty five plates in the original portfolio, sixteen have been selected, with certain pages of Matisse's accompanying French text.
Using a pair of scissors, Matisse cut forms out of colored sheets of paper which he kept arranging and combining until he has achieved a harmonious juxtaposition of harmonious colors. In the entire process he found it unnecessary to draw a single line. As he wrote in the text for " Jazz ", He drew with scissors, cutting into the color as a sculptor cuts into stone. " It was a historic moment in Modern Art : Matisse has discovered a brilliant and successful; new method as a painter.
To accompany these images, which recall the chromatic opulence of miniature paintings, no printing type seemed appropriate. So Matisse, harkening back to the magnificent and picturesque calligraphy of The Middle Ages, wrote the text in his own hand.
The rare out of print collector's art book measures 7 3/8" W X 4 3/8" H X 1/4" D, with 52 pages. It features 17 full color lithograph print images including the covers, 5 pages of English text by Matisse about The Jazz Portfolio work, 2 page postscript in English by E. Teriade, and 4 pages table of images key.
It is in excellent very clean vintage condition consistent with age, light signs of handling, and light wear. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
