"Look for the union label..."
These vintage Lucite bookends proudly display The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) label. Dating from the early 1980s, this bookend set is a rare and very cool piece of American industrial labor history.
Founded in 1900, and at its peak one of largest labor unions in the United States, the ILGWU was a major influence in American labor history. In 1995, the ILGWU merged with the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union forming Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE), which in turn merged in 2004 with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) creating a new union known as UNITE HERE.
These are genuine vintage acrylic bookends from the 1980s. The Lucite blocks are mounted on a metal base which have rubber bottoms to protect furniture surfaces. The acrylic has a patina of age and some light scratches.
