A very unique, one-of-a-kind muscular oak chair which is also incredibly comfortable to be used both as a lounge chair/armchair or even a desk chair. A beautiful blend of styles-historic antique chairs and the modern era with a Mid-Western saddle type upholstery, all of which points to the Holland born American furniture designer Herman De Vries.
Herman De Vries was born in Holland and died in the United States. His father was an artisan who created small wooden ships. Herman emigrated to the U.S. as a young adult and worked with furniture makers in the Midwest, including one of the Stickley Brothers, most likely Albert, whose company, Stickley Brothers, was located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
About Herman De Vries.
In the 1930s, DeVries appears in Bennington,Vermont. There he bridged the gap between colonial-styled and modern furniture with the “Colonial Creations” and the “Modern Creations” lines, both manufactured by the H. T. Cushman company. Each DeVries piece was inspired by antique forms, including humble cobbler’s benches and carpenter’s nail boxes, but was designed to fit into the modern home and serve modern functions. Because there was no antique precedent for items such as the telephone table and the cocktail table, DeVries designed them in a way that would blend well with the antique and the modern. His chairs are particularly notable for their charming cutours and the comfort of their saddle seats.
