The 1st edition extra large volume monumental hardcover art book with transparent hard velum mylar dust jacket is published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers, New York, printed in Japan in 1989. It features an expansive monograph survey of the Abstract Expressionist artworks of the artist Helen Frankenthaler, with accompanied compelling text authored by Museum of Modern Art curator John Elderfield.
Helen Frankenthaler ( 1928 - 2011 ) is an American Abstract Expressionist painter of a liberal Jewish background, and is a major contributor to the history of Postwar Modernist painting. She exhibited her work for over six decades, spanning several generations of Abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever changing new art works.
Her work has been the subject of several major retrospective exhibitions including The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, The Jewish Museum, and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has been exhibited worldwide since the 1950's, and was awarded the National Medal of the Arts in 2001. Artworks by Frankenthaler are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Helen Frankenthaler created images of beauty and power that have influenced countless other artists, including many older than she. This book's major study of her work offers a superb analysis of the evolution of her art beginning in the early 1950's.
In addition to her monumental paintings on canvas, are studies on paper, prints, book covers, ceramic and metal sculpture, tapestries, set designs, and mural works - 262 of them illustrated in color, with an additional 138 in black and white. Along with the reproductions of the works themselves are archival photographs that trace Frankenthaler's life and career.
Author John Elderfield, award winning critic and museum curator, spent ten years studying Frankenthaler's work in preparation for this landmark volume to shed light on her enormous achievement. The accompanying notes, list of illustrations, chronology, bibliography, and index provide extensive background information making this book a valuable reference source for artists, scholars, and the general interested reader.
