A rare vintage, botanical seed poster illustrating different seed types. Produced for the Information Service for educational purposes by what is today known as Coop, Denmark’s largest supermarket chain. This well-kept, nostalgic, and artfully decorative lithograph poster has sat unseen and untouched on a factory shelf for 60 years and was only recently found when the factory closed. It is what is termed ‘new old stock’.
The poster was drawn by Ellen Backe in 1943, and produced by three Danish seed merchants around the 1950s. Ellen Backe (1891-1975) was employed by The Horticultural Department from 1935-1958, where she would paint Botanical illustrations of Danish fruit types, as an assistant for Anton Pedersen, who was a professor in fruit cultivation. Ready to hang, each has 2 holes in the top to thread a piece of twine or ribbon through and is mounted on a hard cardboard backing with a narrow dark brown taped border. As shown in the last photo, this poster is part of a series which consists of 6 different posters numbered I to VI. If you are interested in mounting the entire series or several posters together, they are all for sale in my shop. NOTE: the staged photo pictures just 1 of the 6 versions available and may not be the version listed here.
