A bright and breezy oil painting of a dark-haired young woman wearing a wide-brimmed, floral hat and seated at a table decorated with a large vase of flowers. A charming and period work by this European-trained Venezuelan Post-Impressionist.
Manuel Mujica first studied at the School of Plastic and Applied Arts under Antonio Edmundo Monsanto and Rafael Ramón González (1939-1942). Over the course of a long and successful career, he exhibited widely and with success including at the Salón Anual de Artistas Independientes held by the Caracas Museo de Bellas Artes (1956-1960), the Institute of Hispanic Culture (Madrid, 1960) and in Barcelona (1967). In 1967, Mujica won a scholarship and stipend which allowed him to return to paint and study in Europe. Later in 1967, he was awarded Barcelona's Real Círculo de Arte Prize. Manuel Mujica's work is held private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Venezuelan National Art Gallery, the National Academy of History in Caracas and the Venezuelan Presidential Residence.
Venezuelan art critic and collector Mayz Lyon has noted that, "two great masters of art have been mentioned for their relationship with Mujica's work: Pierre Bonnard and Marcos Castillo... From Bonnard, he picks up the subtlety and finesse in the use of the finely nuanced colors and from Castillo... his freshness and poetic lyricism".
