He studied traditional Japanese ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. After his graduation he took a job at the Imperial Household Museum. Always a good idea for an artist, because it gives you the feeling of a safe income. However Aoyama Masaharu retired rather early from this job in the late 1930s.

Aoyama worked primarily as a painter. As a printmaker he was feeling close to the sosaku hanga art movement. A part of his print output was self-carved, self-printed and self-published. Another part was published by Ishiyama.

Aoyama Masaharu's prints are different from those of most sosaku hanga artists in the sense of technical skill. Aoyama apparently mastered the artisan skills of the trade better than his sosaku hanga colleagues. less
