The rounded and well-proportioned form with two handles, exquisitely hand chiseled in high relief with six paneled motifs including crane, lion, bird and monkeys (auspicious symbols for longevity, fortune and promotion), the side of the cover designed with openwork of leafy scrolls and the center decorated with a Taoist deity, a *seal mark on the base, good condition with age-consistent wear, marks and mellow patina, fitted hardwood base, private New York collection.
Late 19th century, late Qing Dynasty.

*Seal mark 'Mei Rong An' indicates that this censer originally belonged to a Buddhist nunnery.
