Super Stunning Steelcase Seating!!! This is a FANTASTIC set of 8 light oak bentwood dining chairs by iconic designer Warren Snodgrass for Steelcase! In an email to BarryBlog, Mr. Snodgrass described the design of the famous frame to be configured from a single piece of elliptical oval steel tubing which made it economical to produce without sacrificing the pleasing aesthetic of the chair. And although these chairs are the later design which is constructed of beautiful oak bentwood frames…boy was he correct! They have clean, sleek, classic lines with open backs and contoured seats upholstered in a lovely beige fabric. Unfortunately, three of the chairs seem to have been used extensively and have much wear to their fabric and, even though five remain almost new looking, you may want to recover. We also have the original brochure!! They are extremely comfortable, bursting with Modern style, and will look wonderful surrounding a dining, office, game, or conference table!! They would also be stunning extra seating scattered about in your living or family room!
Warren Snodgrass founded the firm of Design Technology in 1975. His extensive background in architecture design and space planning led to many successful furniture designs with elite manufacturers such as Steelcase, Stow Davis, Thonet, Tropitone, and Haworth. He received industrial design awards from the American Institute of Architects, the Resources Council, the A.S.I.D. and the Institute of Business Designers. Among his award-winning designs is the Perception Chair, which received four major awards. In 1992 his signature Snodgrass Chair was added to the permanent design collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Warren Snodgrass passed away in 2010.
Steelcase was founded as the Metal Office Furniture Company in 1912 by Peter M. Wege in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Metal Office Furniture Company's first products included fireproof metal safes and four-drawer filing cabinets which Wege invented and manufactured for the Macey Company. In 1914, the company received its first product patent for "The Victor," a fireproof steel wastebasket. The Victor gained popularity due to its light weight achieved through a patented process of bending flat steel at right angles to create boxes, and its ability to prevent fires at a time when smoking was common indoors, particularly in the workplace. In 1915, the company began manufacturing and distributing steel desks and in 1937, the company collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright on office furniture. The partnership lasted two years and resulted in some of the first modern workstations. The company officially changed its name to Steelcase, Inc. in 1954 and became known as the leader of the furniture industry in the late 1960s due to the volume of its sales and in 1973, the company debuted the Series 9000 furniture line. Steelcase merged three of its subsidiaries, Brayton International, Metro Furniture and Vecta to form Coalesse in 2008. The three main brands of Steelcase Inc. are Steelcase, Coalesse, and Turnstone. The company's current headquarters was built in 1983 and is in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
