This Michael Halsband rare vintage 1999 offset lithograph photo print custom framed fine art poster " Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat " 1985, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The fine art photo print poster is published by The New York Graphic Society, printed in The United States in 1999 in an unnumbered limited edition. It features an iconic photo image originally created by Halsband in 1985 titled " Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat ", copyright 1999, New York Graphic Society.
Michael Halsband ( B. 1956 ) The American born photographer is internationally known for his striking portraits of celebrities, from Rock stars to artists, as well his commercial and editorial work for major publications such as Vogue, GQ, and Esquire among many others. His visibility and connection with celebrities led him to the photoshoot that became one of the most recognized projects.
In 1985 Halsband was invited to a dinner held by Andy Warhol in the back room of a New York restaurant, where he was seated next to Jean Michel Basquiat. Basquiat told Halsband he had been a fan of his work for years. Later, Basquiat asked Halsband if he would photograph the poster for his and Warhol's upcoming collaborative exhibition at The Tony Shafrazi Gallery, mentioning that they wanted a boxing theme poster.
When Halsband agreed to the project, Basquiat told Warhol of Halsband's involvement. Warhol reminded Basquiat they has already asked Robert Mapplethorpe to photograph the poster, but Basquiat insisted that Halsband would do it. Thus began the story of the creation of one of the most iconic portraits of the two artists and lasting evidence of their friendship and competitiveness.
Michael Halsband's double portrait of Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat side by side wearing Everlast boxing trunks, boxing gloves, with their arms crossed over their chests, is only one image from a series of 15 rolls of film from the photoshoot. However, this bold highly contrasting striking photograph remains as a reminder of the collaboration and relationship between two of The Twentieth Century's most recognized and collected artists, and has become one of the most iconic portraits of these two legendary figures.
The rare out of print offset lithograph print framed fine art photo poster measures 25 1/4" W X 31 1/4" H X 1 1/4" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern matte eggshell finish museum box style black wood frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in excellent " like new " condition. The poster print is in excellent " like new " very clean condition with very light signs of handling.
