S. Raphaely (also known as Tzvi Raphaeli) was an Israeli impressionist painter. A Rabbi and an artist, he successfully merged two divergent careers together into a blend of beauty and harmony. Raphaely was born in Egypt and moved at a young age to Paris. During the dark years of World War II he studied art at the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts under the direction and guidance of Jean Souverbie. While a student there, he was also a "Maquizard", a member of the FFI, the underground resistance movement in occupied France. In 1945 he immigrated to Israel and studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. Later in his life he lived in the United States. Rabbi Raphaely is known for his works of art in varied media including oil and watercolor, depicting street scenes in Israel, scenes from Jewish life and festivities, and occasionally floral still life subjects. His artwork shows great versatility of matter, mood and technique conveys a deep feeling and expression of love of his land and his people. Raphaely's artwork is expertly done, with strong lines, yet with the grace which is characteristic of all his work. His use of color is warm, but usually restrained. On occasion, however, he will create an effect with impasto or with intense colors, which make for a feeling of awe, as in his depiction of the interior of a synagogue, or for a joyous mood, as in a still life of flowers. All his paintings and ceramics, whatever the subject, are infused with delight, affection and poetry. Austrian born Israeli Art critic Theodore F. Meisels once wrote in The Jerusalem Post: "Should Raphaely, ever attempt to harmonize his two worlds, then this genuine painting 'Chassid' could develop into an Israeli Chagall...". In an occasion Chagall himself said about Raphaely: "Raphaely is one very unique painter who knows what the color wants...". Zvi Raphaely died in 2005. less
