RARE Couroc of Monterey Tolouse Lautrec and one of his signature posters - Divan Japonais. If you know Henri de Toulouse Lautrec you know of this very famous poster. If not, I encourage you to do an internet search.
The Divan Japonais poster is obvious, but is the gentleman Toulouse Lautrec? He wore hats, dressed well, had a goatee and was an alcoholic. He also sometimes painted dogs, but I can’t find that he painted or had a poodle. This gentleman’s legs are also too long for Toulouse Lautrec, but perhaps the Couroc artist took license.
It’s a beautiful one-of-a-kind (though they did make more than one) Couroc of Monterey tray. One of my favorites – and I have a lot of favorites.
This tray has good condition with surface scratches consistent with age and use. The colors are muted, but I believe that is by design, not fading.
The Couroc Company was founded by Guthrie Courvoisier and his wife Moira Wallace, who was an artist, in 1948. They designed and made thousands of trays, bowls & accessories which were hand inlaid by master craftsmen using shells, coins, woods & metals. Each piece is one of a kind. Sadly, Couroc stopped production of these beautiful trays in 1998.
The tray measures 18" wide, 12.375" tall &. 75" deep. less
