Andy Warhol worked in the 1950s as a freelance children’s-book illustrator and at that time he shared an apartment with his mother and 25 cats. After finding his companion in his first cat Hester the colony of cats extended. Warhol created colorful lithographs of the felines in his spare time. In 1954, the artist released the drawings, accompanied by his mother’s calligraphy, in the limited-edition book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy.
Andy Warhol and his mother shared a love of cats so strong that their home was filled by a multitude of felines, all but one named Sam; the sole outlier, Julia's beloved companion, was named Hester. In addition to cat rearing, the mother - son cohabitation eventually led to a series of creative collaborations and an adventure in self publishing. The title of the book suggests 25 Cat, however it only features prints of 16 different cats. All cats are named Sam except for the cat named Blue Pussy.
The rare offset lithograph is in very good conditions and measures 11.8”by 16" (30 by40 cm). It has never been framed and always been kept in the portfolio. It has now been offered for a competitive price. less
