This Alexander Calder rare vintage 1967 Mid Century Modernist Mourlot fine art lithograph print custom framed exhibition poster is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The lithograph print exhibition poster is published by the famous Atelier Mourlot Paris, printed in France in 1967 in an unnumbered limited of 1000, copyright Atelier Mourlot.
When the Mourlot studio opened a location in New York City, after a successful exhibition organized by The Smithsonian Institute in 1963, it commissioned several famous international artists to create a series of original lithographic posters to celebrate the event.
This 1967 original color lithograph poster was Alexander's contribution to the project. Featuring primary colors and biomorphic shapes, the imagery in Calder's lithographs is often reminiscent of his sculptural work. While many of his prints may appear abstract, a closer look will reveal symbols of stars, plants or animals.
Alexander Calder ( 1898 - 1976 ) was an American born Modernist artist. Although primarily known for both his innovative kinetic mobiles and monumental public sculptures, he also created important paintings, prints, theater set designs, jewelry design, tapestries, rugs, and political and commercial commissioned posters. Born into a family of artists, his work first gained attention in the 1920's in Paris, and was soon championed by The Museum of Modern Art New York resulting in his first retrospective exhibition in 1943. His artistic talents were renowned by the 1960's. Calder is credited with creating some of the most important Modernist artworks of The Twentieth Century.
The venerable famous printing house of Atelier Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by the Mourlot family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
The rare out of print fine art lithograph print framed Modernist poster measures 22 3/8" W X 29 1/8" H X 1 1/8" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern recessed beveled detailed matte eggshell finish black wood frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in excellent " like new " condition. The poster print is in excellent " like new " clean vintage condition consistent with age, light signs of handling, and very light minor surface wear.
