Roy Lichtenstein ( 1923 - 1997 ) The American born Pop Artist of a Jewish background, is one of the the most well known and loved worldwide Contemporary artists. During the 1960's along with Andy Warhol among others, Lichtenstein became a leading figure in the new Pop Art Movement. His work defined the premise of Pop Art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, he produced precise compositions often in a tongue in cheek manner. The artworks of Lichtenstein are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.

Lichtenstein's first solo show at The Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962 sold out before opening. Prices for his work rose quickly. In 1965, German collector museum founder Peter Ludwig asked Castelli, what price Lichtenstein might accept to sell " M-Maybe " from his personal collection. By then, the going rate was $6000 and Castelli estimated $12,000. Ludwig offered Lichtenstein $30,000 to purchase the painting. Today Lichtenstein's work has sold for more than $90 million at auction.
