Offering a rare-as-a-hen’s-tooth Art Deco – Moderne – torchiere floor lamp by the esteemed Miller Lamp Company. A long while ago an “interested party” identified this lamp as having been designed by a particular and noteworthy designer, but alas, that attribution has exited my brain, along with so much else…
But the materials and styling of this exceptional piece clearly support the “designer” attribution.
The three tabs on the metal shade (pictured) were originally soldered onto the piece below it. Needless to say this rather fragile connection wouldn’t “sit well” during transport. The soldered connections are no longer intact, but the good news is, “who needs them, anyway?” The shade sits quite comfortably and accurately on the three tabs and on the piece below, and unless you have frequent earthquakes or a cat that likes to rub up against floor lamps, it will stay right were you position it.
Originally the various lamp parts were plated, I presume with a brushed nickel finish, but the only element sporting that original finish is the shaft. All the other elements – namely the base and the shade – have been spray-painted to give the great results you see in these pictures.
The original socket remains inside its housing, and I’ve added a couple of “bulb extenders” so the bulb sits higher (there used to be very large standard-based bulbs available, but no longer). You can use any size bulb you want; I believe you can still find them in 200 and 250 watts.
When the lamp is on, the ceiling reflects the light from inside the shade and bathes the room in a lovely ambient, relatively shadow-less light. Obviously light comes out between the metal louvers, adding to the very dramatic visual impact of the lamp.
This lamp will be the crowning decorative (and practical) touch for your Art Deco-Moderne environment!
Measurements: Standing 65 inches high; the shade is 16 3/4 across. The base measures about 9 1/2 inches across.
The base (from the floor to just below the shade) will be shipped independently, as will the shade (far too fragile to be packaged together). less
